SUBJECT: THE CCMA CAUTIONS THE PUBLIC ABOUT A MONEY DEFRAUDING SCHEME
The Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) wishes to warn members of the public and CCMA Users of a scam wherein a fraudster disguises as a CCMA official claiming to assist Users with their cases, with the aim of defrauding CCMA Users off their monies.
A recent case was reported in Limpopo, wherein a fraudster pretending to be a CCMA Commissioner at the Polokwane Regional Office, used a mobile phone to call a User claiming to be handling her case, instructing the User to consult a particular medical doctor (who is non – existent), at a fee, to acquire a certain medical certificate required for the finalisation of the case. This resulted in the User being defrauded of a total sum of R800.
Members of the public and Users are reminded that the CCMA’s statutory mandate of dispute resolution (conciliation and arbitration) are free of charge. Furthermore, the CCMA’s official communication with Users is not done through mobile phones, rather, through official CCMA office lines and email addresses.
Members of the public and stakeholders are encouraged to kindly contact the CCMA Contact Centre at 0861 16 16 16 if there is a need to validate case details.
Should any CCMA official solicit money or favour from stakeholders, please report the incident to the CCMA Fraud and Corruption Hotline: 0860 666 348. Confidentiality is guaranteed.
